    Job Summary & Key Responsibilities


    MercuryGate is recruiting a talented CTO to provide both technology and business vision, while delivering results.

    The CTO will have overall accountability and ownership for MercuryGate’s Development, Quality Assurance, Operations and IT/Security teams, and report directly to MercuryGate’s CEO. This role will serve as a member of MercuryGate’s Senior Leadership Team. The role will be based in our Cary, North Carolina headquarters office.



    As a seasoned technology and software development veteran, the CTO will set and drive the overall direction and vision for MercuryGate’s technology strategy, as well as innovate and scale its technical products to support our current customer base, as well as drive future exponential growth. The CTO will also have a strong background in successful operational and tactical performance. The CTO will ensure that MercuryGate’s technical environment is secure, and has the necessary safeguards in place which inspire confidence in our customers, partners and employees.

    The CTO will collaborate closely with MercuryGate’s senior leaders (e.g. Product Management, Professional Services, Operations) to understand development requirements, identify potential risks or roadblocks, and drive successful execution of technical product development requirements and releases.


    As a hands-on leader, the CTO will create a highly productive and efficient work environment. This leader will be a role model for their management team(s) by providing clear prioritization of objectives, timely and appropriate communication, and continuous demonstration of ownership and accountability.




    Vision & Leadership

    • Responsible for establishing the company’s technical vision, leading all aspects of the company’s technology development.
    • Focus complex company priorities into a result-oriented technology roadmap.
    • Collaborate with the senior leadership team to develop a perspective on future state technology and product development, based on trends in the current transportation and logistics industries.
    • Develop a strong communications framework which promotes an understanding of strategy, key objectives, project accomplishments and a clear articulation of priorities.
    • Build and maintain a top-flight technology team by attracting and retaining key talent.
    • Provide a strong decision-making framework to support an empowered management team.
    • Continuously nurture talent through coaching, enablement and other development programs.
    • Proactively ensure the Development, Operations and IT/Security teams are well-positioned in terms of staffing, processes, and other budgetary resources to support the company’s future growth and scale.


    Development Leadership

    • Employ and administer effective software development and project management methodologies for administering development schedules, quality processes, and documentation.
    • Develop and execute on an application and platform portfolio strategy which streamlines support requirements, simplifies supporting processes, improves the customer experience, reduces operating costs, and improves solution scalability.
    • Provide architectural guidance and advanced technology development for new product initiatives.
    • Proactively manage technology services and product suppliers; establish strategic service provider partnerships with clear SLA’s and governance frameworks.
    • Work collaboratively with senior leadership & management to ensure appropriate project prioritization / rationalization for IT priorities, projects and investments.

    Infrastructure & Operations Execution

    • Partner with external CSO to ensure all of MercuryGate’s security and regulatory compliance obligations are met, including those associated with customer requirements and other critical company certifications (e.g. ISO).
    • Drive a strategic view and strategy for disaster recovery and business continuity.
    • Demonstrate a metrics-driven approach to ensure efficient operation of the core global infrastructure, data center, and related services (e.g. network services, infrastructure security, and system uptime); Reliability and responsiveness of services are a key criteria when measuring performance.
    • Drive consistent, common tools and processes to improve efficiency and process scalability.
    • Partner with other senior leaders to ensure that infrastructure systems (e.g. CRM, HR, Financial Planning, Operations, etc) meet all technical and security / compliance requirements, and support implementation as needed.
    • Ensure that all aspects of technology across the organization have the ability to support US markets, as well as scale to support future global expansion.



    Job Qualifications & Other Requirements



    • Technology executive leadership experience with world-class technology organizations (e.g. high tech, financial services, etc), including stints as a CTO or equivalent role.
    • MercuryGate’s TMS is a SaaS application in a private cloud. As such, familiarity with our technical environments are required, which include:
      • Java, Javascript, React, Node, REST, microservices, Spring boot, SQL (Oracle), cloudbased hosting platforms (AWS, Azure, Google, or similar), business intelligence platforms (Sisense, Hadoop, Flink/Spark, R), modern dev-ops techniques, Docker, Kubernetes, Zuul, Jenkins, automated testing tools, volume & load testing, and agile development practices
    • Experience with mission-critical business-to-business (B2B) applications is required; Experience with Transportation Management Software (TMS) or transportation / logistics industry is a plus.
    • Proven track record in building, growing and managing software development and technology teams (e.g. org design, recruitment, retention, development).
    • Significant experience in utilizing and implementing Agile development methodologies across an enterprise.
    • Experience in delivering and supporting software in a highly regulated environment.
    • Demonstrated track record of building, growing and leading technology teams; ability to guide organizations through significant change and growth.
    • Experience acting as a change agent for the company, accelerating the adaptation of change and flexibility by team members.
    • Strong experience in building collaborative relationships with senior leaders (peers), management, employees, customers and vendors.
    • Ability to build a talent pipeline for technical talent; experience in attracting, hiring and management talent at different levels of experience (e.g. experienced hires, new college hires).
    • Academically well-qualified; solid educational foundation (e.g. Bachelor’s degree), although an advanced degree in IT, EE, CS, BA or other related field is preferred.
